Dear Dr. NAACLS
Complying with 1995 Essentials

This letter was received in Dr. NAACLS' mailbox. . .

Dear Dr. NAACLS,

I received my seven-year award from the Board of Directors in the mail. My review was based on the 1986 Essentials. Does this mean I do not have to comply with the new requirements of the 1995 Essentials until my next review in 2004?

Signed,

Curious Program Director

Dear Curious Program Director,
First off, congratulations on your seven year award! NAACLS reserves this award for programs that have shown quality and stability over a long period of time. You should be proud that your program continues to maintain such high standards.

The 1995 Essentials were officially implemented on March 1, 1996. However, because of the nature of NAACLS notification of renewal cycles, many programs were already involved in the self-study process. In fairness to these programs, NAACLS offered them a choice of review under the 1986 Essentials or the 1995 Essentials. Your program fell into this category and you chose to be evaluated under the 1986 Essentials. This does not mean your program is not responsible for meeting the requirements of the 1995 Essentials.

The following requirement is listed under the Maintaining Accreditation section (Section VII) of the Essentials for all NAACLS program levels:

Programs are required to comply with administrative requirements for maintaining accreditation, including, in accordance with federal and state requirements, verifying compliance with these Essentials upon request from NAACLS.

NAACLS is recognized by the US Department of Education, and as such is responsible for monitoring programs between cycles as well as evaluating them during scheduled reviews. If credible evidence exists that your program is in violation of the 1995 Essentials, NAACLS may request documentation that your program is in compliance. At that time, regardless of which Essentials version was used during your last review, your program will be evaluated using the 1995 Essentials.

The bottom line is that ALL accredited and approved programs must be in compliance with the current Essentials or Standards at ALL times. The current version of the Essentials is the 1995 version, and as such, programs are responsible for maintaining full compliance with the new requirements as of March 1, 1996.

If you have any questions about your program, please call the appropriate program coordinator at the NAACLS office, (773) 714-8880, or email us at NAACLSINFO@naacls. org.

Sincerely,

Dr. NAACLS
