I am preparing my Self-Study Report and need to know which faculty are considered "primary faculty" as required by Essential 8A. I have four academic faculty teaching the didactic portion of the courses and 25 clinical/adjunct faculty who oversee the students at five affiliates. Do I need to prepare faculty fact sheets for all of the faculty, both clinical and academic?

The definition of "primary faculty" includes those teaching courses, supervising clinical laboratory teaching experiences (if applicable), developing curriculum, formulating policies and procedures, and evaluating program effectiveness. Interpretation of this definition is very much left to the discretion of the institution.

It would appear that your faculty teaching didactic courses would definitely be considered primary faculty. These faculty may also have some duties in the clinical laboratories or they may not. There is probably one person at each clinical site who takes the responsibility for the education of the students at that site. Depending upon the size of the laboratory, there may be more than one person at each site who is designated as "primary faculty. " These designated persons would most likely be responsible for the coordinating of activities at that site.

The term "primary faculty" does not necessarily mean every technologist nor technician teaching students at the bench. In fact, the majority of the people termed "primary faculty" would probably be involved in the annual meeting with affiliates. It would appear that you would need one "primary faculty" fact sheet for each of your didactic faculty and at least one from every clinical site. The final decision about who is included is yours to make.
