Dr. NAACLS

Dear Dr. NAACLS
Proposed Changes for CLS/MT Essentials

Dear Dr. NAACLS,

I keep hearing about proposed changes in the Essentials for the Clinical Laboratory Scientist/ Medical Technologist. How do I find out what the changes are? Can I comment on those changes?

Signed,

Concerned Program Director

Dear Concerned,

The profession is always changing, and NAACLS has a responsibility to serve the profession by keeping up to date with those changes. Periodically, NAACLS reviews the Essentials of every program, and seeks to insure that they are relevant to the changes in the profession and in compliance with US Department of Education standards. In addition, NAACLS tries to clarify any wording that has led to confusion for program directors and site visitors.

The proposed Essentials are available on the NAACLS website at www. naacls. org. In addition, staff at NAACLS will be happy to mail, email or fax a copy to you. Just write, call or email (naaclsinfo@naacls. org) NAACLS with your request, and the proposed Essentials will be sent right out to you.

Once you receive your copy of the proposed Essentials, please let NAACLS know what you think. Sometimes, program directors have collected independent comments from their entire staff. Others have held group discussions. In fact, NAACLS held an Open Hearing on April 7, 1999 on the proposed Essentials and it was very well attended. The comments and concerns that NAACLS received are being addressed in a new edition of the proposed Essentials. Your comments do matter!

The proposed Essentials will go through several steps in the process of becoming new Essentials, and each step provides an opportunity for you to comment. The proposed Essentials were developed by a Task Force appointed by the NAACLS Board of Directors in the Summer of 1998, and several revisions were developed from conversations with the Board, reader comments from ASCP and ASCLS, and review by a subcommittee of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Programs Review Committee.

The following is a general time table for the Essentials:

March 1999

Proposed Essentials discussed by the NAACLS Board of Directors and placed on NAACLS website (www. naacls. org).

April 1999

Proposed Essentials discussed at Open Hearing and at ASCP Board of Registry meeting.

May 1999

A new draft of the proposed Essentials posted on the NAACLS website (www. naacls. org) and mailed to interested parties.

May-July 1999

Additional comment period.

July 1999

Proposed Essentials reviewed by the Clinical Laboratory Science Programs Review Committee meeting.

August 1999

Proposed Essentials discussed at ASCLS.

October 1999

Final revisions incorporated and presented to NAACLS Board of Directors.

NAACLS needs your comments to prepare the CLS/MT Essentials for the future.

Sincerely,

Dr. NAACLS
