Advice for Accredited and Approved Programs
|
Dear Dr. NAACLS:
I have been a program director for several years and have completed
a site visit for NAACLS. I have applied twice for a position on the CLSPRC but
was turned down each time. How is the process of appointment to that committee
carried out? Why do you think I was turned down?
Sincerely,
Disappointed
Dear Disappointed,
NAACLS solicits nominations and self-nominations for all positions
on the Board of Directors and Program Review Committees. When the nominations
come in, NAACLS staff assembles the information from the Vitae and any
information from the NAACLS database into a comparative grid. This grid is sent
to the nominations committee for consideration.
Committee and Board positions have specific requirements that are
published and must be met. In addition, incumbents may (and usually do!) opt to
run for a second and final term. When all of the nominations are collected and
compared, the Nominations Committee is charged with the task of reviewing all of
the qualifications of the nominees to determine the best fit. Numerous factors
may play into the process, such as experience with NAACLS programs, experience
as a NAACLS volunteer, the location, type of institution represented, and even
other talents! Based on the open positions, the Nominations Committee forwards a
slate to the Board for consideration. At times, the Nominations Committee has
been unable to decide between two highly qualified nominees. In these cases,
they forwarded both candidates to the Board. The Board of Directors is
responsible for election of new Board and Committee members.
NAACLS has been blessed with a large number of professionals who
volunteer time and energy to the NAACLS processes. While there are only a small
number of positions on the Board of Directors and Programs Review Committees,
there are a large number of ways to volunteer time and talent. NAACLS is always
looking for paper reviewers and site visitors. It also seeks spontaneous
comments on the many areas where NAACLS is growing, such as the new Draft
Histology Standards.
NAACLS welcomes and appreciates volunteers, and we wish to thank
all who volunteer. Please keep trying and keep volunteering!
Sincerely,
Dr. NAACLS
