Advice for Accredited and Approved Programs
|
Dear Dr. NAACLS:
After a long and successful career, I am retiring to enjoy the fruits of my
labors! My institution has selected the new program director, but I am curious
about how I should help with the transition. I am especially concerned with how
the new program director will meet the requirement of "experience in
Accreditation/Approval and Certification procedures."
What should I do to help my replacement?
Sincerely,
Sunshine-bound Program Director
Dear Sunshine-bound:
The qualifications for the program director are found in Standard 5A3 and
include certification, education, educational experience, and "knowledge of
education methods and administration as well as current accreditation/approval
and certification procedures." These qualifications should be considered in the
search for a new program director.
Once a new program director is selected, NAACLS must be notified. The program
has 30 days to notify NAACLS, at which point NAACLS requests documentation from
the new program director, reviews the documentation, and approves the change.
Until the new program director is approved, the previous program director
remains the primary contact for the program.
Knowledge of accreditation/approval and certification procedures is often one of
the more difficult areas to document. One of the best ways to accomplish this is
by attending a NAACLS workshop. NAACLS generally sponsors three or more
workshops per year, and these workshops will not only satisfy this requirement,
but also assist in the development of new Self-Study Reports! If that is not
possible, a period of mentorship with the former program director is an
excellent tool - especially if the proposed program director is a current
faculty member.
Self-Study Reports are important documents for programs. Often, along with the
Paper Review and Site Visit Reports and their respective responses, they provide
the model for self-study at the next review. In addition, many program directors
keep files, labeled as "Standard 1," "Standard 9B," etc., that provide updated
information for incorporation into the new Self-Study Report. The new program
director will find all of this documentation very helpful when the next
Self-Study Report becomes due!
"When does the next Self-Study Report become due?" is a likely question for an
observant new program director. The Accreditation/Approval Award and the
accompanying letter is a critical source of information, both for the due date
for the next Self-Study Report and the due date and required content for any
Progress Reports. Finally, NAACLS requires, in Standard 22C, ".informing NAACLS
of relevant administrative and operational changes within 30 days. This includes
changes in program official names, addresses or telephone numbers; affiliates,
status (e.g., inactivity, closure) or location; and institution name." New
program directors should be aware of this requirement!
After NAACLS has approved the change, NAACLS staff will send the new program
director a welcome packet. This packet includes a Guide to
Accreditation/Approval, the NAACLS News, tips on writing objectives, and, or
course, information on volunteering! Volunteering as a paper reviewer or site
visitor is an excellent way to gain knowledge about accreditation procedures, as
well as a way to identify best practices in other programs.
Congratulations on your well-earned retirement! I hope that you enjoy the
sunshine.
Sincerely,
Dr. NAACLS
