Advice for Accredited and Approved Programs

Dear Dr. NAACLS,
My institution houses a CLS/MT and CLT/MLT program that are both accredited by NAACLS. The accreditation award for my CLS/MT program expires in April 2009, while the accreditation award for my CLT/MLT program expires in October 2010.

I would like to request an extension of accreditation for my CLS/MT program so I can align their accreditation cycles and have a joint site visit. This would save me a great deal of work, rather than having to repeat many of the similar processes within 18 months of each other! However, since extensions of accreditation are deducted from the next accreditation award, will I have to repeat this "extension" process over and over again if I want to do this again in the future?
Sincerely,
Overwhelmed Program Director

Dear Overwhelmed Program Director,
Institutions that house multiple programs can now request an extension of accreditation to align the accreditation cycles of each program without having the extension deducted. Prior to September 2007, programs needed to request an extension of accreditation for the needed amount of time, and this amount of time would then be deducted from that program's next accreditation award. However, as of September 2007, any program within the same institution that would like to request an extension of accreditation to align the accreditation cycles of each program will no longer have to continually request an extension provided that:

All programs are located at the same institution
The extension of accreditation is for no more than two (2) years
After review, all programs receive an accreditation award for the same length of time

If the above criteria cannot be met, then the institution must go through the former process of requesting an extension of accreditation each time they would like to align the accreditation cycles of their programs. Approval of this alignment of accreditation cycles is for one time only.
Sincerely,
Dr. NAACLS
