			Standards for Accredited and Approved Programs The new Standards for Accredited and Approved Programs, adopted by the NAACLS Board of Directors in September 2012, are posted. Please subscribe to the NAACLS News blog to learn all the details about implementation. Programs that have Self-Study Reports due in fall 2014 and accreditation/approval awards expiring October 2015 will be using these Standards.

			Self-Study Template NAACLS Programs undergoing the Accreditation process can complete their Self-Studies using a pdf template. The Self-Study Template can be completed using the free version of Adobe Reader. Simply download the file and follow the instructions within. Completed Self-Studies can be submitted to NAACLS via flash drive. Please note that you must save the file, not work on it online.

			Program Revitalization: Strategies for Survival A task force chaired by Donna Spannaus-Martin has been charged to review and update the NAACLS Program Revitalization: Strategies for Survival document. Other task force members include Linda Ross, Debbie Wisenor, Randy Vandervander, Fred Rodriguez (board liaison), and Gwen James-Oriaikhi (staff liaison). The Program Revitalization Task force would appreciate any ideas/strategies that you might have to include in the updated document. These can be sent directly to Donna Spannaus-Martin.
			Online Clinical Laboratory Science Education Programs View the ASCLS Clinical Laboratory Education Online Directory that lists a number of MLS and MLT programs that offer at least some distance learning (online or otherwise).
			Frequency of Citations by Standard The linked pdf shows citation data from 2003-2009. This should be useful to programs preparing for initial and continuing accreditation reviews.

			NAACLS Cautions about Degree Mills NAACLS is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, and, as such, is committed to quality in education and educational review. Institutions or accrediting bodies that do not undergo such rigorous review are often termed "degree mills" or "accreditation mills", and the certificates and degrees offered may be of dubious quality or even bogus. As the CHEA website states, "Degree mills and accreditation mills mislead and harm. In the United States, degrees and certificates from mills may not be acknowledged by other institutions when students seek to transfer or go to graduate school. Employers may not acknowledge degrees and certificates from degree mills when providing tuition assistance for continuing education. 'Accreditation' from an accreditation mill can mislead students and the public about the quality of an institution. In the presence of degree mills and accreditation mills, students may spend a good deal of money and receive neither an education nor a useable credential." 			Department of Labor Announces Health Care Sector Grants On July 23, the Department of Labor (DOL) announced the availability of approximately $125 million in new grant funds authorized for projects that provide training and placement services to help workers pursue careers within the health care sector. Grant applications must be submitted to the DOL no later than October 5, 2009.
