Board adopts approval process for laboratory assistant programs
by Diana Mass, MA, MT(ASCP)CLS
Member, NAACLS Board of Directors

At its 1995 fall meeting, the Board of Directors passed a motion to implement an approval process for laboratory assistant programs. NAACLS has spent the last two years assessing the need for such a program. Both educators and laboratory managers were surveyed to determine the need for a structured training program and for the utilization of laboratory assistants. Based on the surveys, NAACLS chose to develop an approval process for this developing laboratory role.

NAACLS president Cynthia Wells appointed Judith Bruce, former CLSPRC and PARC member, to chair the Laboratory Assistant Programs Approval Task Force. Ms. Bruce's experience on NAACLS committees and projects will certainly provide the necessary leadership for the task force.

NAACLS' history and experience in the approval process for phlebotomy and cytogenetic technology education will surely benefit this emerging laboratory position as the clinical laboratory profession struggles with the utilization of this category of employees.
