Volume 62 - Winter 1996

Executive Director's corner
by Olive M. Kimball, EdD, MT(ASCP)
Executive Director

This is an especially exciting edition of the NAACLS News as you may already have observed. Much has been happening and many changes have taken place since the last edition. The revision of the Essentials has involved a tremendous amount of effort for the committees and the Board over time. Numerous public hearings were held and many of you provided very helpful comments that were subsequently incorporated into the revisions. You will see various interpretations of the changes in both the Bruce and Contois article and in the one by Norton German.

Staff have observed that the change in terminology, from MT to CLS/MT for example, has been well supported by program directors. In her column, President Wells points out that this combined terminology came about in response to changes in the field and is intended to support the many programs that have taken on these names and titles. There is no intent to delete the original designations nor to persuade programs with original terminology to change. We have been making appropriate changes to NAACLS publications for many months. We've also made every effort to update the data base with correct program titles as soon as possible and greatly appreciate it when you bring a change to our attention.

Adoption of Essentials for Pathologists' Assistant programs was another noteworthy event accentuating the breadth of scope encompassed by the laboratory professions and accredited or approved by NAACLS. Committee members again provided the impetus for countless hours of meetings, hearings, editings and negotiations.

The Board of Directors has concluded that establishing a formal approval process for laboratory assistants is also within the scope of NAACLS activities. This, along with full cooperation with other agencies in development of standards for multi-skilled workers, reflects yet another look to the future on the part of NAACLS.

You will notice an innovation in this issue; the announcement of upcoming site visits. This is one component of federal requirements NAACLS must meet as an independent accrediting agency. It is one of the ways in which we are able to announce when a program is being considered for accreditation, thus providing an opportunity for broad input about the program's suitability for accreditation.

Finally, you will see a collection of truly photogenic as well as talented committee and Board members introduced in this issue. Those who have served before are thanked, along with their colleagues, for their work to accomplish the exciting events of the past months. Those who are new to NAACLS are warmly welcomed and can be assured that they are both needed and valued.
