Inactive status redefined
by Denise K. Johnson
Program Coordinator, Program Services

Staff receive numerous inquiries from programs regarding the meaning of inactive status. NAACLS previously defined an inactive program as one that did not enroll students for 12 months or more. As a result of recent concerns about the limitation of this policy, the Board of Directors has modified the policy to allow for more flexibility.

Under the former policy of inactive status, a program could remain inactive for a maximum period of two years, after which time the program either had to reactivate or discontinue. Now, programs have the option of requesting an extension for two years if the following information is submitted:

  1. A statement of continued financial support from the chief executive officer of the sponsoring institution.
  2. A tentative date for the reactivation of the program.

This information will be evaluated by the appropriate review committee. If the chairman of the review committee determines that the program is likely to reactivate but needs more time to do so, a recommendation to the Board of Directors will be made to extend the inactive status for an additional two years. If there is a need, a program has the option of applying to extend inactive status every two years. This policy is applicable to all programs currently on inactive status.

It is believed that this change will grant programs the flexibility needed during these times of financial uncertainty. Should you require more information about the details of this change in policy, please contact Program Services staff at (312) 714-8880.

Ms. Johnson is the Program Coordinator for CLT/MLT, HT/HTL and Phlebotomy Programs.
