Dear Dr. NAACLS, I am going on my first site visit for NAACLS in a few days. I am nervous because I want to do the best possible job. I was hoping you could help me. What is my role as a site visitor for NAACLS? Signed, Rookie Volunteer
Dear Rookie, First of all, congratulations and thank you for getting involved in the accreditation process! NAACLS is dependent upon volunteers. We appreciate your professional commitment and your willingness to take time out to improve clinical laboratory science education. Your question is an excellent one, and I am sure there are many volunteers who are unsure how to approach their role as site visitor. I will try to give some general advice. Remember, there is no need for a site visit to be torturous for either the program director or the visitor. Also, the team coordinator, an experienced site visitor, will help you through the process. Site visitors serve as the eyes and ears of NAACLS. Site visits are meant to be fact-finding tours of a program. The information to be collected is neatly outlined on the Site Visit Report. Site visitors should carefully examine the Self-Study Report prior to the visit, and mark any special areas of concern identified by the paper reviewer and in their own analysis. The site visitors should confirm the presence and adequacy of documents provided by the program, as well as assess the adequacy of facilities. Site visitors provide valuable information to the review committees. This information is considered along with program responses to the Paper Review and Site Visit Report. After assessing all available information, the committee then formulates a recommendation. Site visitors are fact-finders, sent as representatives of NAACLS, to assess the presence or lack of presence of certain documents, facilities and resources. They are guests of the institution and must respect the institution's autonomy, mission and goals. The service which volunteers provide is invaluable to the process. The board relies upon the objective assessment of site visitors to make important accreditation decisions. Site visitors do not make accreditation recommendations for NAACLS. All accreditation recommendations are made by the appropriate review committee and all accreditation decisions are made by the Board of Directors. Site visitors should never indicate to a program that the program is or is not in compliance with a particular Essential.
A Site Visitor Manual is sent to all volunteers prior to the site visit. Be sure to look there for further guidelines and instructions. Also, NAACLS provides periodic workshops to help volunteers better understand the process. Sincerely, Dr. NAACLS
