Volume 63 - Spring 1996

Fee changes: the ups and downs
by Olive M. Kimball, EdD, MT(ASCP)
Executive Director

What's going up

Annual Accreditation Fee due July 1, 1996: $900
Annual Approval Fee due July 1, 1996: $800

July 1, 1996 will see the final implementation of annual accreditation and approval fee increase plan which was approved in 1993. Effective for the invoices for 1996-97, which will be sent to all accredited programs at the end of June, annual accreditation fees will cap at $900 and annual approval fees were previously capped at $800. The plan was designed to permit a gradual increase over time to assist program administrators with the allocation of resources.

What's coming down

Affiliate Fees:
$25 per affiliate (up to a maximum of $300)

In accordance with the Board of Directors' decision in 1995, a cap will be placed on fees charged for clinical affiliates. Effective July 1, 1996, a program will pay no more than $300 for clinical affiliates no matter how many are used. A program with one affiliate still pays $25; a program with six affiliates still pays $150, but a program with 15 affiliates will pay only $300.

Programs are still required to have an accurate listing of currently used affiliates in their file at NAACLS. Now, however, if a program lists 12 or 20 sites, the fee will be limited to $300.

What's coming down

50 Percent Fees for Inactive Programs Effective July 1, 1996:
Inactive Accredited Programs: $450
Inactive Approved Programs: $400

A new policy related to inactivity of programs was also approved by the board in 1995. A program is considered inactive if it does not enroll students for 12 months or more yet continues to maintain a program director and medical advisor/medical director and to pay NAACLS' annual fees. Effective July 1, 1996 programs that have notified NAACLS of their inactivity are required to pay one-half of the annual fee, or $450 for accredited programs, $400 for approved programs. Furthermore, under specified circumstances a program may apply for an extension of inactivity beyond the limit of two years.

Questions related to implementation of this policy should be directed to the executive director.
