Tracking and reporting enrichment sites no longer required
by George J. Payan
Program Coordinator, Program Services

The Board of Directors decided at its April 11, 1996 meeting that enrichment sites for accredited and approved programs would no longer be tracked by NAACLS staff. While these sites have traditionally been part of a program's record, the unique experiences at enrichment sites are actually supplementary to a program. Sites are limited to experiences lasting two weeks or less, and not all sites are utilized annually. Contractual agreements are not required by the Essentials/Standards and programs are not billed for the sites. Programs utilize such sites to enhance the educational experience available to students.

This change will simplify the selfstudy process for programs since they will not need to identify enrichment sites in SelfStudy Reports. Also, paper reviewers and site visitors will no longer need to verify this information to the NAACLS review committees.

Programs may continue to pursue and maintain active contracts for enrichment sites to insure appropriate experiences for students. However, NAACLS will only review affiliations with institutions that provide clinical education for a substantial portion of the program. Requirements for signed and current agreements for this primary instruction are specified in the 1995 Essentials/Standards for accredited and approved programs.
