Affiliate site visits may be conducted via videotape
by Olive M. Kimball, EdD, MT(ASCP)
Executive Director

The Board of Directors has adopted a policy providing for videotaping an affiliate in lieu of a site visit. This may occur at the discretion of the site visit team and with prior approval from NAACLS.

Affiliates are often at some distance from the sponsoring institution and programs are relying on increasing numbers of affiliates to support the education of students. Understanding this and that program resources are restricted, the board approved this method of assessing a clinical affiliate.

The policy has specific requirements. For example, when developing a videotape, program administrators must address specific information related to the site. Among these are laboratory size, how students progress through the various areas and how they are taught. Students and the clinical coordinator must be interviewed on tape. Additional written materials are requested such as lists of major items of equipment and teaching materials.

The option to create a videotape instead of having site visitors visit an affiliate should be considered carefully, balancing benefits against possible disadvantages. Benefits include a saving of time; disadvantages include the inability to see the actual operation of the laboratory and how students are accommodated.

If the benefits outweigh the disadvantages, discussion with the site visitors and NAACLS staff should be initiated to allow sufficient time for a tape to be produced before the visit. Specific guidelines for developing videotapes and are available from NAACLS.
