On Tuesday, June 18, 1996 the NAACLS petition for renewal of recognition as a nationally recognized accrediting agency was presented before the National Advisory Committee on Institutional Quality and Integrity (NACIQI) in Washington, DC. President Wells, Dan Angelucci and I represented NAACLS at the hearing. James Dougherty, the United States Department of Education (USDE) staff member who has been working closely with us, presented the USDE analysis of our petition and was questioned by the committee. Dr. Wells then made a brief presentation after which she answered a few committee questions. There were no questions for Dan or for me and NACIQI voted unanimously to support the staff's recommendations for recognition. The recommendations of the committee will be forwarded to the Assistant Secretary of the Office of Postsecondary Education, David Longanecker. We should hear formally about his decision within a few months and it is likely that he will agree to the committee's recommendation. The recommendation was for continued recognition for three years with a Progress Report due in 1997. There are still procedural changes that need to be in place by then in order for us to be in full compliance with the law. If these changes are acceptable when the Progress Report is considered, it is likely that we will receive additional years of recognition. The maximum possible for any one period is five years. Overall, NAACLS was treated with great respect by both USDE staff and NACIQI members. All three of us were very proud to be representing the agency at that forum. During the process of application for recognition, it has been a busy eighteen months for us here in the office interpreting the regulations, proposing policy changes to the Board of Directors, developing procedures in line with both regulations and policy, and communicating with programs about new issues. At the same time we carried out all of the normal accreditation and approval activities. It's been a time of change and of challenge. Throughout, staff have demonstrated the ability to meet the challenge and be accepting of change, and I greatly appreciate their efforts. Board and committee members too have also eagerly met the challenges and, as a result of their leadership, NAACLS is now well positioned as an independent agency.
