Since its inception in 1994, the Affiliated Professions Review Committee (APRC) has steadily progressed through all prerequisite steps in the development of an accreditation process for pathologists' assistant educational programs, culminating in the recent recommendation to the NAACLS Board of Directors for initial accreditation of two educational programs. Conceived to accommodate pathologists' assistants and potentially other laboratory professions approaching NAACLS, the APRC began by developing Essentials of Accredited Educational Programs for the Pathologists' Assistant. After extensive public hearings and following the board's adoption of the Essentials in October 1995, site visit procedures and review committee functions were adapted from existing standardized procedures of other NAACLS review committees. The first Self-Study Report was submitted by Wayne State University in October 1995, followed by Duke University and Quinnipiac College in 1996. Thus, three pathologists' assistant programs currently recognized by the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants (AAPA) have sought NAACLS accreditation. The AAPA avidly supports the NAACLS accreditation process. The progress made by the APRC within this time frame is remarkable and a testament to the hard work of many NAACLS volunteers and staff members. These include: Lucille Contois, Charter APRC Member; Irene Roeckel, APRC Vice Chairman; Olive Kimball, Executive Director; Dan Angelucci, Administrative Liaison, plus John Ryan, Board of Directors' Liaison, and many other volunteers and staff members too numerous to cite. The AAPA looks forward to a long and rewarding relationship with NAACLS to foster the highest academic standards within pathologists' assistant training programs. Mr. Phipps is Chairman of the Affiliated Professions Review Committee and Mr. Suvalsky is a member of that committee.
