An explanation of Essential 7 for CLT/MLT programs
by K. Nisi Zell, EdS, MT(ASCP)SH Vice Chairman, CLSPRC
|
The 1995 Essentials of Accredited Educational Programs for the CLT/MLT are well on their way to universal usage within the NAACLS accreditation process. Several programs in histology, CLT/MLT and CLS/MT have undergone the accreditation process under the auspices of the 1995 Essentials. Feedback to date indicates that Essential 7 for the CLT/MLT programs has been a bit troublesome, especially since the 1986 Essentials did not require a faculty appointment for the medical advisor/medical director. A frequently asked question has been, "What exact documentation is needed to support compliance?"
Essential 7: Faculty Appointments states:
- The program director and medical advisor/medical director shall have faculty appointments in each affiliated academic institution. The appointment may be a regular one, a non-salaried clinical or courtesy appointment, or an adjunct appointment, depending upon the regulation of the academic institution.
Essential 7 was written to respect institutional prerogative with regard to faculty appointments. The type of appointment should be the decision of the institution. Compliance is documented by a letter granting the appointment from either the president or the chief academic officer of the affiliated institution. NAACLS must see evidence that an appropriate appointment exists. An institution may choose to use formal measures regarding the appointment for medical advisor/medical director and include the appointment in official institutional publications. However, an appointment letter from an appropriate institutional officer will meet this Essential.
Ms. Zell is Vice Chairman of the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Programs Review Committee.
