From time to time we read and hear of persistent misconceptions about NAACLS endeavors. We try to address these on our World Wide Web site or in the NAACLS News. Your comments and questions are invited. Misconception: The NAACLS Inventory, the NAACLS Directory, and the American Medical Association's Allied Health Directory, all contain the same information. Reality: There is overlap to a very limited extent, for they all include the name and address of the program, program director, medical advisor/medical director, etc. However, they are three distinctly separate publications, two of which are published by NAACLS, the other by the AMA. The AMA publication is now called the Health Professions Education Directory (HPED) and is available only from the AMA. It includes approximately 30 different accredited occupations and occupation levels, including the CLS/MT, CLT/MLT, HT/HTL and pathologists' assistant programs accredited by NAACLS. Annual publication of this directory was begun in the 1970s, and NAACLS programs have been cooperating with the AMA collection of data since that time. The result is a very large database of program information that permits analyses of trends. This annual, commercially produced publication is a large volume of data, including charts and tables, which is purchased by libraries as well as by educational administrators and guidance personnel. In the last few years, and for a modest cost, each year the AMA has made available to NAACLS page copy containing NAACLS program information. The AMA grants us permission to publish the NAACLS programs lists (not charts nor tables), and we do so in-house under the title of the NAACLS Inventory of Accredited Programs. There are separate inventories for each level accredited by NAACLS, and we also develop an additional Inventory of Approved Programs, which are not part of the AMA survey. These individual inventories are sold at cost, considerably less than the cost of a complete HPED purchased from the AMA. Students and guidance personnel are the major purchasers of these documents. The NAACLS Directories of Clinical Laboratory Science Education Programs, which reflect CLS/MT, CLT/MLT and HT/HTL levels, contain extensive application, enrollment, curriculum and affiliate information for each participating program. None of this information is included within the inventories. Program directors are the providers of this information and are also the major purchasers of the NAACLS directories. It has been the practice to update this directory every two years. For a compendium of data about a wide variety of allied health programs, the HPED is valuable. The NAACLS inventories provide a list of names, addresses and telephone numbers of NAACLS accredited/approved programs, program directors, medical directors, program start date, and date of next accreditation review. Both of these publications are updated yearly. For complete information about NAACLS' accredited programs within a given level, the NAACLS Directories provide the only source and are invaluable. The information is updated every second year. Dr. Kimball is NAACLS Executive Director.
