The NAACLS accreditation process ensures that CLS/MT, CLT/MLT, HT/HTL and pathologists' assistant programs maintain standards of excellence in educating laboratory professionals. An added benefit is that it heightens the visibility of these programs with administration and provides a forum to showcase what each program has achieved. This fact was demonstrated to us during the accreditation process for the Medical Technology Program at the University of Massachusetts Lowell during the spring 1996 semester. The past Provost, Dr. Sukant Tripathy, was so impressed with the NAACLS accreditation process, including the Self-Study Report and the site visit, that in his report at the annual Administration and Research Center Retreat, he stated that the NAACLS accreditation process was the best experience of his tenure as Provost. Furthermore, Chancellor Dr. William Hogan and other administrators sponsored a luncheon for all faculty and staff of programs that had successful accreditation reviews. In his remarks at the luncheon for our Department of Health and Clinical Sciences, Chancellor Hogan congratulated all of us on our accomplishments. He stated that the administration understood the amount of work it took for all of us to meet and maintain the NAACLS Essentials. He said that he was very proud of the level of excellence we had achieved and commended our Dean, Dr. Janice Stecchi, for her direction of the college. Dr. Robert Wagner, current Provost, also spoke to the group and praised all programs in the College of Health Professions for their commitment, hard work and ability to work together toward a common goal. He stated that our college's programs were a standard by which to measure others in the university. Finally, after our official NAACLS notification of accreditation renewal, Chancellor Hogan sent a letter to all the faculty in the College of Health Professions and stated:
Needless to say, the NAACLS accreditation process not only helps programs achieve excellence in clinical laboratory science education; it also helps heighten administrators' awareness of the profession's entry-level education requirements and the work that faculty and staff must perform to meet and maintain these requirements. Dr. Doyle is the Program Director and Professor at the College of Health Professions, University of Massachusetts Lowell.
