As an independent accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE), NAACLS is required to comply with numerous specific standards, in much the same way as accredited programs do. For example, we are required to publicize all pending reviews as well as accreditation actions and to provide numerous reports to the Secretary of Education.

Accredited programs are required to provide accurate information in any materials produced. The following discussion may help to clarify these requirements.

Accreditation is a status awarded to a program that has been carefully reviewed and found to meet or exceed stated standards of quality in educational practice. Programs accredited by NAACLS must exhibit integrity and responsibility when publicizing their status in promotional literature, brochures, catalogues, letters and official publications. This includes any materials on the Internet.

Use of the term 'accreditation' is reserved only for programs granted that status by official bodies such as NAACLS. Terms such as 'full accreditation' or 'fully accredited' are not accurate because programs cannot be partially accredited. Statements must be clear, accurate and current.

Programs listed as accredited should include only those accredited by the recognized body. Programs not reviewed by NAACLS, even if they are within the same unit and closely related, may not be listed as accredited. No future or anticipated (in-progress) accreditation status should be included. When the accreditation status is publicized, statements should include the name and complete address of NAACLS. No reference to past cooperation with CAHEA should be included because NAACLS has been independent since 1994. Such a reference would not meet the criteria of currency and accuracy.

These guidelines for publication of program status and for citing the accrediting or approval body should be followed whether for accreditation or approval. The requirements are clearly stated in the Essentials for accredited programs and in the Standards for approved programs and are found under Operational Policies/Fair Practices.
