NAACLS celebrates 25 years of service to higher education by Frederick W. Pairent, PhD Secretary, Board of Directors

The 25th anniversary of NAACLS' service to higher education is being celebrated this year. Incorporated in 1973 as a nonprofit agency, NAACLS was the successor to the American Society of Clinical Pathologists' (ASCP) Board of Schools. ASCP and the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (then the American Society for Medical Technology) sponsored the organization of NAACLS and remain sponsors today. Since that time, the National Society for Histotechnology, the Association of Genetic Technologists and the American Association of Pathologists' Assistants have joined NAACLS as actively participating organizations.

Several events will mark the celebration this year. Birthday receptions will be held for the attendees at three or four meetings of national organizations. The planning committee is discussing the possibility of an educational symposium followed by a gala reception and banquet to be held in Chicago next September.

A 25th anniversary commemorative publication will be compiled. Past board presidents and committee chairmen have been asked to contribute short written papers that document the past history of NAACLS and comment on the forseeable future of specialized accreditation. While these papers will provide a major portion of the publication, program directors are invited to contribute short statements of their remembrances of significant events in accreditation or about earlier times. Please forward these to Dr. Fred Pairent, Chairman of the 25th Anniversary Planning Committee or to Dr. Olive Kimball, Executive Director.
