NAACLS celebrates its silver anniversary in 1998. During the year we will pause to reflect on our history and successes while we renew our commitment to the improvement of academic quality through accreditation. Our strategic plan focuses on addressing the future needs for specialized professionals in the health care environment. We look forward this year to completion of the Standards and Competencies for clinical assistants. A modular concept developed for the clinical assistant programs is intended to meet the varied needs across the country. Within NAACLS there is also a renewed commitment to existing accredited programs. We continue to see programs close, particularly those programs in clinical laboratory science/medical technology. NAACLS suggests that program directors be sensitive to the specific changes in their environment that may jeopardize their programs. Early recognition of critical environment signs can help you to position your program to survive and to succeed. There are additional suggestions the program administrator may consider. For example, develop a cost/benefit analysis of your program. Define the program's value to its publics (consumer, health care facility, students). Involve community leaders, physicians, health care administrators, and other health care professionals in planning. Make your program visible. Look for the opportunities. If necessary, consider moving your program to another institution that can more easily accommodate it. Network with other program directors to gain insight into maintaining and nurturing your program. NAACLS volunteers and staff can refer you to program directors who have successfully survived threatened closures. NAACLS is committed to supporting program directors. Volunteers and staff can facilitate networking and communication among program directors. The agency will continue its excellent educational programs and materials. Continuing enhancement of these services will assist you in your professional growth. Individual professional growth is a key element in program success. Each of us must look for the opportunities to stretch beyond the traditional, to develop new skills, to work with new projects, to work with other professionals on the health care team, to anticipate the future, and to assist in creating the future. NAACLS, likewise, will be cognizant of the constantly changing health care regulatory environments. We will look for new opportunities to collaborate with other educational groups and for opportunities to explore new relationships with other accrediting and governmental agencies as we strive to lead accreditation in to the future. Ms. Davidson is the President of the Board of Directors
