Dear Dr. NAACLS,

My HT-AD program was just reviewed by the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Programs Review Committee (CLSPRC). The CLSPRC recommendation included a marginal citation regarding my objectives. After receiving the recommendation in the mail, I submitted my revised objectives to NAACLS. I received a letter from the staff indicating that this material would be treated as a Progress Report and reviewed by the CLSPRC at its next meeting. My understanding was that no action was final until the Board of Directors acted. Why were my new objectives not reviewed prior to the Board meeting?

Dear Perturbed Program Director,

The Guide to Accreditation describes the different roles of the CLSPRC and the Board of Directors. In Section I, under the heading of CLSPRC Evaluation, the Guide states the following:

The CLSPRC evaluates programs seeking accreditation and forwards its accreditation recommendations to the Board of Directors. CLSPRC members serve as readers of self-study and site visit materials for programs.

In contrast, also in Section I, under the heading of Board of Directors Evaluation, the Guide states:

The Board of Directors evaluates the review committees' accreditation recommendations for accuracy, objectivity and consistency. The board may approve a recommendation, amend it or return it to the committee for reevaluation.

The Board of Directors evaluation is not the detailed evaluation of review documents (e. g. , the Site Visit Report, Response to the Site Visit Report). This review is provided by the CLSPRC. Rather, the Board is charged with ensuring consistency across accreditation and approval actions. Because the Board of Directors' role is not to review programs in detail, all materials used to formulate accreditation recommendations must be reviewed first by the CLSPRC. The time between the review committee meeting and the Board meeting is used for careful analysis and review of the recommendations to ensure that all programs are evaluated reliably and consistently.

Any materials used to formulate a program's accreditation action must be submitted prior to the CLSPRC meeting. The approximate date of the meeting where your program will be reviewed is noted on the letter sent by NAACLS staff with the Site Visit Report.

The materials you submitted to NAACLS after the CLSPRC meeting will be sent to two members of the CLSPRC for preliminary review and then presented to the full committee at its next meeting.

The NAACLS process is designed to ensure both a detailed review of programs by the review committees, and a review for consistency of application of the Essentials and Standards across disciplines and program levels by the Board of Directors.
