Volume 68 - Winter 1998

APRC report
by Steven Suvalsky, BSMT, MHS
APRC Chairman

It is with excitement and honor that I begin my term as chairman of the Affiliated Professions Programs Review Committee (APRC). This excitement is inclusive of the fact that, as NAACLS celebrates its 25th anniversary, the pathologists' assistant profession has just completed its 25th year of existence. We can be proud knowing that both NAACLS and the pathologists' assistant profession have made tremendous impacts in clinical laboratory sciences and continue to do so.

My agenda for 1998 is simple and will continue in the philosophy established by the APRC objectives. I hope to address the following issues with the APRC team:

  1. Dispense with the label "training programs" (technical/vocational schools) and encourage "educational programs" (professional education) when referencing the pathologists' assistant accreditation process.
  2. Encourage the concept of visitation (collaboration) by a team of peers rather than an inspection (police enforcement) by a team of peers.
  3. Foster continual development of the educational programs by encouragement and assistance. (Establish lines of assistance for program directors in NAACLS accredited programs and utilize the experience of these individuals for programs and potential programs working toward accreditation. )
  4. Recruit potential APRC volunteers for site visits and paper reviews.

Mr. Suvalsky is the Chairman of the APRC.
