The Board of Directors has approved Standards for an Approved Program for the Clinical Assistant. This document was developed at the request of many health care institutions and community colleges. The objective of the Standards is to assist medical and health professions to cooperate to establish, maintain, and promote standards of quality for educational programs and to provide recognition for such programs that meet or exceed the minimum standards. The committee that developed the Standards was chaired by Mary Beth Fisk, MT(ASCP), Director of Education at South Texas Blood and Tissue Center in San Antonio, TX. Other committee members were Joanne Cerrato, MA, BS, MT(ASCP), Department Chair, Clinical Laboratory Sciences, Springfield Technical Community College, Springfield, MA; Diana Mass, MA, MT(ASCP), CLS, Program Director, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ; Cecile Sanders, MEd, MT(ASCP), Dean of Health Sciences, Austin Community College, Austin, TX; Helen Wand, BS, MT(ASCP)SM, Clinical Director, Phlebotomy, Clark College, Vancouver, WA; and Cynthia Wells, EdD, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP), Director of Regional Health Education, Raleigh, NC. I also assisted by serving as Board Liaison to this committee. This committee has now become the Clinical Assistant Programs Approval Review Committee. The development of the Standards occurred over a four-year period. Input was sought from many sources, including open hearings held during meetings of the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA), the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), and the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). In addition, professional reviewers from the sponsoring organizations, ASCLS and ASCP, commented on a draft. NAACLS expects clinical assistant programs to be located in colleges and universities, hospitals, medical centers or health systems, laboratories and other post-secondary institutions or consortia. The program is modular, allowing for training in individual areas of the laboratory. There is a required core module along with other modules. The program is designed to work in conjunction with modules from other health care disciplines. The Competencies describe the duties of the clinical assistant at a level below the clinical laboratory technician/medical laboratory technician. The clinical assistant is expected to work under the supervision of a qualified person. NAACLS looks forward to helping institutions develop quality programs to assure the competency of clinical assistants. Ms. Davidson is President of the Board of Directors
