Celebrating 25 years of service

In ceremonies held in Chicago on October 22, 1973 representatives of the American Society for Medical Technology and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists signed incorporation papers creating NAACLS. The new agency replaced the Board of Schools of ASCP, which had served the previous 25 years.

The first official meeting of NAACLS was held the following December, and several members from the Board of Schools were selected to be representatives from both ASCP and ASMT. They included (taken from the Minutes): I. Roe, R. French, H. A. Spence, J. Benson, W. Thompson, and C. R. Macpherson. The latter was elected Chairman, and the Secretary was R. French.

From the NAACLS archives emerged a poem composed and read by the chairman at the board dinner the following August. It is reprinted in part.

We worked hard together by day or by night
Forever debating just what was right.
Let us never forget what we have done
The good deeds cemented together with fun.
Don't fret or be sad, don't raise your hackles.
The board has transformed right into NAACLS
Which gives great joy to its last chairperson
More commonly known as Colin Macpherson!
This means we have one more date to remember
-- Nineteen seventy-three, the eighth of December.

NAACLS is celebrating the year with events/activities at national meetings and with the production of a commemorative booklet. This will include remembrances from individuals who have been closely involved in NAACLS over the years. An educational symposium is planned for September in Chicago.
