Volunteers are the lifeblood of NAACLS
by H. Elise Galloway, PhD, MS
Member, NAACLS Board of Directors

Volunteers are the backbone of numerous organizations around the world and provide the core strength of these organizations. The dictionary defines a volunteer as "a person who enters or offers to enter into service of his own free will. " Such a person must understand the purpose and/or scope of the organization and be willing to work to achieve its goals and objectives.

Since NAACLS accredits and approves clinical laboratory science education programs, it depends upon a cadre of professional volunteers to conduct much of its business. Its mission speaks to the importance of its volunteers. One statement reads, "NAACLS is dedicated to peer review as the foundation of accreditation and approval. Volunteers are highly valued and the agency strives to prepare and assist them to provide exemplary program analysis. Such analysis is based upon principles of honesty, fairness, objectivity and integrity. "

Volunteers may serve as members of NAACLS review committees, on the Board of Directors, as paper reviewers and/or as site visitors. Depending on the volunteer position held, the length of commitment may vary from a few weeks to four years. Responsibilities depend on the activity with which the volunteer is involved. For instance, as a paper reviewer, a volunteer may only have to commit a few hours of time at his/her convenience. As a committee member, the commitment may be for as much as four years and involve scheduled meetings plus the time necessary to review appropriate documents. Each of the activities that are performed by volunteers has a specific position description with responsibilities defined. Specific requirements for membership as a volunteer are delineated in the NAACLS Policy and Procedure Manual.

All volunteers must have some characteristics in common. They must demonstrate:

  • A commitment to the goals of the organization
  • A willingness to participate in the accreditation or approval process using his/her expertise
  • An understanding of the educational process and the role accreditation or approval plays in its success
  • Knowledge of the Essentials and Standards for the disciplines accredited or approved
  • Honesty in all dealings with other volunteers, members of the staff and professionals in the disciplines
  • An appreciation for the need for confidentiality in all matters related to NAACLS' business

Volunteers are the lifeblood of this organization. In order for NAACLS to achieve its mission, it must rely on its volunteers. All persons interested in the education of clinical laboratory personnel are invited to participate in the NAACLS review process.
