Accuracy in advertising and recruiting materials
by Olive M. Kimball, EdD Executive Director
|
When NAACLS was recognized as an independent agency by the USDE, that recognition included requirements to implement several new policies. Among them is a policy mandated of all recognized agencies, and it requires accredited programs to list the NAACLS address and phone number when referring to their accreditation status in catalogs or recruitment materials. The policy is intended to assist students in receiving fair, accurate, and verifiable information about programs and institutions.
While NAACLS has always required the dissemination of accurate information to students, the NAACLS address and phone number were not required until our recognition by USDE. Now that information must be included when accreditation is mentioned.
Publishing the address, however, sometimes means that students will write or phone NAACLS when requesting information about the program. To avoid this, we recommend that programs review brochures or other promotional materials to ensure their clarity as well as accuracy. The following suggestions may be of help:
- Publish the program address and phone number (in addition to the NAACLS address and phone number) prominently in all materials that mention the accreditation status. Prospective students need to know how to contact the program, not necessarily the agency.
- Reserve accrediting information (including NAACLS address and phone number) for the inside of any brochure. The source of the mailing may be confused if the NAACLS address appears on the outside.
- Do not use references to former accreditation units (such as CAHEA or the AMA) which are confusing and inaccurate.
- Clarify the difference between program accreditation and individual certification.
- Use the NAACLS web site address when possible: www. mcs. net/~naacls.
Please direct any questions about this policy to Olive M. Kimball, Executive Director at 773-714-8880, or kimball@naacls. org.
