Volume 71 - Winter 1999

President’s report
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP)
President, Board of Directors

NAACLS is pursuing its commitment to excellence in education. Our responsibility is to ensure students receive an education that prepares them for the work environment they will enter.

The difficult task is anticipating what this future work environment will be. Competencies and Essentials are now being written to be consistent with the assumptions made about the future environment.

The Board of Directors, at its long term strategic planning session, set forth goals and objectives for the agency based on the Board's views of the future. A broad-based committee was appointed to begin a review and, subsequently, to revise the Clinical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologists (CLS/MT) Essentials. Using the board's strategic plan as a basis, the committee decided to look at the types of competencies necessary in tomorrow's workplace. The following areas were selected:

  • Utilization of laboratory services
  • Laboratory instrumentation, equipment and tests
  • Regulations and standards
  • Financial functions
  • Planning
  • Human resources
  • Education
  • Leadership skills and teamwork
  • Information systems

Competencies for each area have been drafted along with an appendix to assist programs' understanding of the level of knowledge expected of students.

NAACLS is planning for a diverse review of the committee's draft. We are actively seeking comments from a larger audience than ever before. The review of the draft CLS/MT will begin with readers from the Clinical Laboratory Sciences Programs Review Committee, the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. After comments from these readers, the revised CLS/MT Essentials will be posted on the NAACLS web site for the laboratory community to review and comment upon. An open hearing is planned in Chicago to seek further comments (see insert).

A review and revision process is underway for all other NAACLS programs. Committees have been appointed. It is anticipated that all these documents will be completed and presented to the NAACLS Board of Directors for approval in the fall.

Your comments are welcome and your help is appreciated as we strive to develop documents that will meet the needs of tomorrow.
