Program Revitalization: a professional priority
by Megan Hennessy Eggert
Meetings and Publicity Coordinator

In an attempt to assist CLS/MT program directors worried about possible program closure, a manuscript has been developed that provides strategies for program survival. A Task Force appointed by the Board of Directors has put together in one document information and practical plans for program development and/or survival. Currently, the document is under review by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. When finally approved for distribution, the 45-page document, Program Revitalization, will be made available. Portions will also be available on the NAACLS website.

Program Revitalization focuses primarily on CLS/MT programs but it is intended for use by other program levels accredited or approved by NAACLS as well. Many of the issues addressed and the strategies provided apply equally to these and other professions. The manuscript contains six chapters and several appendices. There are chapters on the background leading to the current problems, survival strategies, and on recruitment and marketing.

Case studies are included as well as statistical tables related to programs and graduates, forms to be used in assessing program costs, and samples of letters that might be used to strengthen program support. The task force, chaired by Kathy Waller, ASCLS Representative to the Board of Directors, a highly informative and useful document for program directors.

Other members serving on the task force were Chris Barzak, Lester Hardegree, Carol McCoy, Linda Comeaux, Karen Myers, and Linda Ross. Special reviewers included Cynthia Wells, Susan Beck, and Bernie Bekken. Questions about the document may be addressed to any of these individuals or to NAACLS staff. Sample copies will be made available at the Clinical Laboratory Educators' Conference (CLEC) in March.
