Use of Videotapes in Lieu of Clinical Affiliate Site Visits
Videotaping Policy

Any program may choose to videotape clinical affiliates. Whether or not site visitors wish to use this information in place of scheduling visits with each site is at the discretion of the site visitors. NAACLS will make the determination as to whether videotapes of new affiliates will be used in place of an actual on-site visit. Factors that may be considered in the decision are:

  1. Favorable comments and ample resources were found in all documentation and or correspondence pertaining to the clinical affiliate
  2. Distance of clinical affiliates from the sponsoring institution
  3. Number of clinical affiliates

Every attempt should be made to visit all clinical affiliates during the accreditation site visit, especially those that have not been visited in a previous cycle. When an on-site visit is not feasible, the above criteria may be used to determine which clinical affiliates need to be personally visited and which may be evaluated through other means. "Other means" must include more than one of the following:

  1. Videotape
  2. Student or graduate interview
  3. Phone calls to the site
  4. Written evaluations of the site by students
  5. Interviews with faculty

The program director should submit in writing:

  1. Major items of equipment in each laboratory
  2. Current instructional resources:
    1. Current reference books
    2. Periodicals
    3. Prepared slides, stock cultures, A-V, etc.

Include on the Videotape:

  1. Introductory and closing remarks
  2. Length of time the clinical site has been affiliated with the program
  3. Number of employees in the laboratory
  4. Number of students
  5. Communication, visits, etc. with the sponsoring institution
  6. Support for the program
  7. Length of training

Demonstrate the following:

  1. The date the videotape was made
  2. Size of the clinical affiliate
  3. Size of the laboratory
  4. How students progress through the areas and how they are taught and evaluated

Include the following:

  1. An interview with current students and/or recent graduates
  2. An interview with the clinical coordinator
