Volume 74 - Winter 2000

President’s Report
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP)
President, Board of Directors

Joeline Davidson Mark your calendar now for Friday, September 22, 2000. On that date NAACLS will host a Futures Conference in Chicago. The meeting will be a culmination of the work completed by the Essentials Task Force, the Clinical Laboratory Educators' Conference (CLEC), and the American Society for Clinical Pathologists Consensus Conference. The purpose of the meeting is the development of:

  • A view of the future laboratory services
  • A view of the CLS/MT and CLT/ MLT professional in that environment
  • A view of the curricular components needed to prepare the professional of tomorrow.

Everyone is welcomed to attend and participate in this exciting and futuristic event. NAACLS will also solicit participation from numerous stakeholder organizations. The conference is not about “today, ” but rather about seven to ten years into the future. We will take a brief look at the environmental factors that are affecting the changes in health care. We will then attempt to describe the future environment.

The Essentials Task Force made an excellent start at defining the future prior to drafting the proposed Essentials. NAACLS then requested readers from the sponsoring organizations, ASCLS and ASCP. The draft was revised and a public hearing was held in Chicago to obtain a more comprehensive input. The proposed Essentials were also presented to CLEC, ASCP Board of Registry, and ASCLS meetings. The document was also placed on NAACLS web site where it still resides. NAACLS has made an effort to obtain broader based comments and obtain them earlier in the development process than ever before. This effort toward broadening the base will continue with the Futures Conference and beyond.

The focus group format will be used during the conference to develop the views listed above. A summary document of the meeting will be distributed to all participating organizations and individuals.

It is imperative that we provide students with an education that will prepare them for the future market. They must have the ability to serve their employers and patients and their clients well with a minimum amount of orientation. The burden of assuring the effectiveness of the educational process falls to NAACLS in concert with its many stakeholders. NAACLS must establish relevant Essentials. Educational programs can be creative in designing programs that will meet Essentials and will educate students to function in an environment that requires high levels of critical thinking and decision making skills.

I sincerely hope you will make your plans now to attend and actively participate in the conference. Make your commitment to the profession. Help us address this important issue.
