Dear Dr. NAACLS
Reactivating a Program

Dear Dr. NAACLS,

My program is currently inactive, but area hospitals are asking for new graduates. I excitedly brought this up to my administration, and they asked what was needed to reactivate the program. Can you help me?

Signed,

Excited Program Director

Dear Excited Program Director,

Congratulations! Inactive status is viewed as a way for sponsoring institutions to manage temporary program interruptions while any local difficulties are resolved. I am happy to hear that you are now ready to reactivate your program.

The first step is to send a letter to NAACLS requesting reactivation. NAACLS will then review the last accreditation award notification to determine when the next Self-Study Report would have been due if the program had not become inactive. If the previously established Self-StudyReport due date has not yet arrived, then a new, acceptable Progress Report for Reactivation will be required.

A Progress Report for Reactivation must include the following:

  1. Reasons for the program' s inactivity and reactivation.
  2. Actions taken to satisfactorily resolve issues that led to the inactive status.
  3. Self-Study Fact Sheets that include updated information on the sponsoring institution, program officials, and the clinical sites.
  4. A current description of the program, including:
    • A statement of program goals.
    • A summary of the main features of the program.
    • The relationships of the program officials and faculty to service obligations and teaching.
    • Current affiliation agreements or memoranda of understanding signed by the responsible parties of each affiliate.
    • Courses to be offered, including sequencing, with brief descriptions, modes of instruction, and clock and/or credit hours.
    • A summary of instructional resources, such as classroom and library facilities, space, equipment, and instructional materials.

Your Progress Report for Reactivation will receive a preliminary review to determine if all of the required information is present and satisfactory. It will then be presented for approval at the next programs review committee meeting. Following committee approval, a date will be set and you will be notified of the time for the next Self-Study Report submission and, if applicable, the subsequent site visit.

If upon review of prior program documents it is found that the previously established Self-Study Report due date has passed, then a Self-Study Report will be due shortly after notifying NAACLS of your intention to reactivate. This Self-Study Report will include the reasons for the inactivity and the reactivation. Please feel free to contact the NAACLS staff with any questions. I wish you complete success in your efforts to reactivate your program and provide the new graduates needed in your area hospitals.

Sincerely,

Dr. NAACLS
