NAACLS has invited a number of its stakeholder organizations (such as the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel, ASCP Board of Registry, American Hospital Association, College of American Pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Management Association, American Association for Clinical Chemistry)to present their views on health care in the future and the laboratorian's role in that environment. Results of the ASCLS Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference and the ASCP Consensus Meetings will also be considered. All conference participants will be asked to work in small groups to help determine the role of the laboratorian (baccalaureate and associate degree) at 5-7 years and at 10-15 years into the future. It was the requirements mandated by the US Department of Education that first prompted NAACLS to review its Essentials. When, in the process, it became apparent that the 1995 Essentials were already out of date for the year 2000, and especially beyond 2000, a task force was immediately assigned to draft new CLS/MT Essentials. NAACLS 'two sponsoring organizations, ASCLS and ASCP, were each asked to have three readers review and comment on the first draft. After their comments were presented, the document was revised and sent to the Board of Directors. With a few changes, the proposed Essentials were placed on the NAACLS web site and comments were solicited. NAACLS held an open hearing in Chicago for the public to review and to comment. The document was revised and presented at ASCLS, ASCP, BOR, CLEC and NCA meetings. After further review by the Board of Directors, NAACLS decided to host a Futures Conference to allow its stakeholder organizations, educators, and laboratorians to help better define the future role of the laboratorian. The proposed Essentials and Preamble were intended for the future. I must admit that, while sitting at my desk at work (laboratory administration)and reading the job description in the Preamble for the first time, I felt a sense of panic. But sometime later, as I thought about it, I realized that I would be managing people doing those tasks in the next few years. Now, only one year later, my laboratory staff is actually carrying out many of those tasks. We are moving quickly into the responsibilities described in the Preamble to the proposed Essentials. Ask yourself what is your most difficult problem and what is the solution for it?Futurists maintain that problem will be essentially irrelevant by the time a solution is developed for it –both problem and solutions are likely to be obsolete. Because of this rapidity of change and also because of the length of the accreditation cycle, NAACLS must focus on the future. The Futures Conference will present a challenge for us to look into the future. NAACLS has committed to a shared vision by its stakeholders, to dealing with the inherent uncertainty and risk presented by the future, and to anticipating how the clinical laboratory science professions will be changing even before these changes are apparent to the general body of the profession. The future of health care will focus on prevention, genetic screening, remote diagnostics, virtual hospitals, timely training, networking and bionics. This is the world for which we must plan and for which we must educate our students. The value and relevance of proposed Essentials depend on the clarity and comprehensiveness of our vision. An organization's most valuable assets are the knowledge, talents, experience, abilities and vision of its people. This is why your participation is essential to the success of this conference.
