Task Force to Provide Recommendation to Board

Last Fall the NAACLS Board of Directors authorized a study of existing molecular programs. A committee, called the Molecular Initiative Task Force, was formed. Shauna C. Anderson was asked to chair the committee. Jane K. Pritchard, CLSp(MB)of the H. A. Chapman Institute of Medical Genetics, Audrey Hentzen, PhD of Illinois State University's CLS program, and Judith Brown, CLSp(CG)of the University of Connecticut Diagnostic Genetic Sciences program, agreed to serve.
The charge to the committee was to review components of existing molecular programs and determine level of current programs and basic competencies required for graduates of diagnostic molecular biology programs. That review has been carried out and the task force will recommend whether or not Essentials should be developed for accreditation.
A report is expected to the board in the summer. In a preliminary report to the Board, it was noted that many programs are waiting for direction on how to proceed in this rapidly growing field.
