NAACLS Computer Update
by Mark D. Erickson
NAACLS Computer Information Services Coordinator

In our last episode of NAACLS Computer Update, our internal database was nearing completion, and we were eagerly awaiting its completion. We are now enjoying the use of the new database and the advantages it gives to the staff. One advantage, which is also a benefit to external users, is the addition of web pages and e-mail addresses for NAACLS accredited and approved programs to our web site (www.naacls.org/search). We are now able to easily export selected information from our database, which makes our web site a more useful and powerful tool for everyone.

Figure 1

Evidence of the usefulness of a database-driven web site can be seen in the average daily visits to www.naacls.org (Figure 1). We added the accredited and approved program search tool at the first of this year, and since that time the average daily visits to our site has increased by almost 100%. Our program search page is the most visited area of our web site, other than our home page (Figure 2).

Figure 2

I believe that we have only really begun to see the benefits our web site can provide to NAACLS. There has been a tremendous response of increased use to the few improvements we have made this year. From the data shown above, it is reasonable to conclude that further improvements can only maintain the increased usage trend, and possibly even increase its rate of growth.

I am excited to see this response, because the improvements we have made so far are minimal. I plan to make many major improvements to the web site in the coming months. We can include on-line features such as surveys, volunteer training, submission of program information, and user-customized content. My goal is to make our web site accessible, informative, and relevant, and to advance it as a valuable tool for information distribution and collection at NAACLS. I welcome any comments you may have about our web site, and especially encourage suggestions for improvement.
