Volume 76 - Fall 2000

President's Report
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP)
President, Board of Directors

Joeline Davidson The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) is committed to being the premier agency for accreditation and approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and related healthcare disciplines. NAACLS provides leadership in fostering innovative educational approaches and actively supports cooperative efforts with other agencies.

NAACLS, in collaboration with its professional organizations, provides comprehensive services including program accreditation, program approval, and continuing education. NAACLS provides these services for educational programs, students, employers and healthcare consumers.

NAACLS is dedicated to peer review as the foundation of accreditation and approval. Volunteers are highly valued and the agency strives to prepare and assist them to provide exemplary program analysis. Such analysis is based upon principles of honesty, fairness, objectivity and integrity.

NAACLS demonstrates commitment to public service by assuring the quality of educational programs. NAACLS will continue to be responsive to the needs of the healthcare community as it strives toward recognition as the premier accrediting organization in health professions education.

This is the mission statement of the organization of which I proudly serve as President. It is an organization of dedicated volunteers giving of their time and professional expertise to help assure excellent education for those providing health care.

The value of our volunteers is difficult to quantify. We could estimate the hours of work and apply a dollar amount, but this amount wouldn't reflect the difference their contribution makes in the lives and education of others.

What is NAACLS' need for volunteers? Last year, we had over 200 professionals serve as paper reviewers and site visitors. We could have used others. Thirty-one volunteers serve on review committees. Thirteen volunteers serve on the Board of Directors. These volunteers make NAACLS one of the most prestigious accrediting agencies. Volunteers are our ambassadors and they are a vital part of the organization's work.

Why should you volunteer for NAACLS? Through this volunteer effort you can develop personal and leadership potential. You will build supportive relationships with others in the field, meet new people, develop your knowledge in the field of accreditation and education, and feel a sense of professional pride and fulfillment. You will have an opportunity to get involved and to make a difference.

Perhaps you are considering volunteering, but you'd like to know more. First, it's your professional expertise that we need most. For the remainder, NAACLS will assist you. We have orientations, workshops, videos, and we will place you with a mentor who is a seasoned volunteer. Becoming knowledgeable about our processes and work is relatively easy; you've already done the difficult part.

How do you become a volunteer at NAACLS? Check the web page: www.naacls.org. Respond to the invitations sent to accredited programs each year. Or just call NAACLS at 1-888-714-4278 and ask to speak to the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Olive Kimball. And if you're not convinced that you should volunteer, I will mention 10 additional reasons:

  1. You get too many telemarketing calls when you stay home.
  2. You've shopped till you've dropped.
  3. Your family could use a break from you.
  4. There are too many soap operas to choose from.
  5. Your boss doesn't remember your name.
  6. If you don't use it, you'll lose it.
  7. Why should the boss have all the fun?
  8. The grass needs mowing.
  9. Your mother would be proud of you.
  10. Who cares about money?

At NAACLS, volunteers are welcomed, respected and valued.
