NAACLS Hosts a Successful Futures Conference
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP)
President, Board of Directors

The first Futures Conference sponsored by NAACLS was a pivotal event for educators and professionals. The conference was seen as a stepping stone to the future. One hundred fifty people attended and participated in the conference. The objectives of the conference were to determine:

  1. the future environment of healthcare;
  2. the roles of the CLS/MT and the CLT/MLT in that environment and,
  3. the curricular components essential to their education.

As part of my introduction, I welcomed everyone and challenged them to take a creative mindset, to focus on the future environment and the means to function in it, to focus on the application of new technologies that can create new opportunities, and to predict and create the trends. I also challenged them to feel empowered for positive action and to view changes as opportunities rather than problems.

The day began with presentations by a number of our stakeholders: AAPA, AGT, AHA, AMT, ASCLS, ASCP, ASCP/BOR, CAP, CLMA, NCA, NCCLS, and NSH. Representatives from these organizations presented their organization's views of the future. The day continued with an exciting keynote address, "Technology Futures Report, " developed and presented by Glynn Perry, Director, Health Systems Division, Abbott Laboratories.

Next, attendees participated in focus groups facilitated by Sharon Rice. Ms. Rice used a network of 15 computers and GroupWare software provided by ASCP to collect and organize the ideas of the participants. A computer at each table was linked to the facilitator's computer, and the ideas of the participants could then be reviewed on each monitor and on two projection screens. GroupWare supports idea generation from brainstorming, idea organization, idea evaluation, issue evaluation and information management.

While this type of process was new for the attendees, the benefits of the software were evident. They included simultaneous input (brainstorming), a teamwork approach, automatic documentation and anonymity. A great deal of information was collected.

NAACLS is very pleased with the data generated by the participants and with the process that facilitated it. We are very appreciative of everyone's contributions to this effort. The outcomes of the meeting will be published at a later date and forwarded to all participants. They will also be available to anyone requesting the information.

It was a long and intense but energizing day for participants. The conference ended with a festive reception and an opportunity for participants to network with their colleagues.
