NAACLS Board Invites Comment on Draft Essentials for Molecular Programs by Megan Hennessy Eggert Meetings & Publicity Coordinator

A year ago the NAACLS Board of Directors authorized a study of existing molecular programs to determine the level of current programs and to ascertain basic competencies required for graduates in diagnostic molecular biology. The review was carried out and, in the spring of this year, the Task Force recommended to the Board that Essentials be developed for programs that prepare the diagnostic molecular scientists. The committee was then charged with developing draft Essentials and competencies to be examined by the Board.

The results of the committee's efforts were sent to the Board for consideration. At its September 23, 2000 meeting, the Board authorized the draft Essentials to be placed on the NAACLS website to invite comment from all interested parties. They may be viewed at www.naacls.org. In addition, copies may be obtained from the NAACLS office. As with other draft Essentials, open hearings will be held so that additional input from program directors, stakeholders, and the general public may be considered.

Shauna Anderson, PhD of Brigham Young University, chaired the Task Force. Other committee members were Judith Brown, University of Connecticut; Audrey Hentzen, Illinois State University; and Jane K. Pritchard of the H.A. Chapman Institute of Medical Genetics.
