Michigan Technological University, at its Winter Commencement ceremonies, awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Clinical Laboratory Sciences to Olive M. Kimball, EdD. Dr. Kimball has served as Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of NAACLS since July 1993. Prior to that time she was Full Professor and an Administrator of allied health programs at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Before her 20-year academic career, she worked as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital setting and as researcher at Argonne National Laboratory. Her Baccalaureate Degree with honors was awarded at Michigan Technological University in Biology and Chemistry. She completed her clinical work at the Michigan State Department of Health in Lansing and at Leila Y. Post Montgomery Hospital. She holds certification with both ASCP and NCA. Dr. Kimball received her Masters Degree in Science Education and a Doctorate in Educational Psychology from Northern Illinois University. She was also a participant in Harvard University's Institute for Educational Management. She has published a number of refereed articles, book chapters and monographs and presented professional papers at national and international meetings. She served as project director and/or principal investigator for federal and state grants and, while an allied health administrator, was a research consultant to the Institute of Medicine's study on allied health published in 1989. Prior to the conferral of the honorary doctorate, Michigan Technological University awarded Dr. Kimball the Board of Control Silver Medal for professional accomplishments and inducted her into the University's Academy of Sciences and Arts. She has received both the Board of Directors Service Award and the Fellows Program Award from the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP). Dr. Kimball is currently on the Board of Directors and serves as Treasurer of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (ASPA). She was appointed to the Specialized Advisory Panel by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), on which she has served for the last three years. She has recently been re-appointed for another term. In addition to her professional and academic achievements, Dr. Kimball is a multi-talented and interesting person. This accomplished woman, whom we think of as our friend Olive, is the mother of a daughter, Karen Lee Kimball and a son Paul Gordon Kimball. Karen, who holds a PhD in Geology, is an attorney in private practice in upstate New York. She is the mother of Jeff and Will, Olive's favorite boys. Paul Kimball teaches Anatomy and Physiology and Environmental Biology at Northeast Iowa Community College where he serves as Department Chair. Olive's life-long interest in music has brought others and herself much pleasure. She is an accomplished pianist and has sung in church choirs and choruses while in school and college. She sang in the University/Community Chorus while at Northern Illinois University. She also is a supporter of the Chicago Symphony. An avid opera buff, she is a supporter of the Chicago Lyric Opera and a member of two Lyric chapters. Olive was active for many years in the League of Women Voters. A more recent interest is volunteering at shelters for victims of domestic violence. Her love for adventure has her often traveling both nationally and internationally. She enjoys walking and exploring new places. Her favorite trips were to Abu-Simbel, Kyoto and Vienna at New Year's . At other times you may find her surrounded by her many friends for whom she enjoys cooking and entertaining. And when all is done, she dons her gloves and attacks the weeds in her garden. Please join me in congratulating this remarkable woman on her accomplishments culminating in this honorary award. Congratulations, Olive!
