Past President's Report
What's Past Is Prologue
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA)
Past President, Board of Directors

Joeline D. Davidsion

Thank you to every NAACLS volunteer! Every site visitor, committee member, task force member, Board member, and other volunteer has contributed to the excellent quality of the agency's work and to the prestigious position that NAACLS enjoys within the accreditation and professional arenas. An excellent staff graciously supports and coordinates all our volunteer efforts with expertise and care.

In recent years NAACLS has broadened its scope. Not only does it provide for the accreditation process, it has taken a lead in bringing all laboratorians together to define the future direction of the professions so as to collectively develop a picture of the future environment in health care and laboratory science. This collective effort has enabled NAACLS to set standards appropriate for the education of future professionals.

The agency is committed to working collaboratively and in partnership with other organizations to accomplish the goals important to the profession and accreditation. NAACLS relies on our sponsoring, participating, and affiliating organizations and works in concert with them for the good of the profession. We are participating in the Summit on Personnel Shortage and have representation in the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors (ASPA) and the Council for Higher Education (CHEA). NAACLS representatives regularly attend and participate in meetings of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS), the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), the National Network of Two-Year Schools of Allied Health (NN2), the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions (ASAHP), and the Clinical Laboratory Management Association.

NAACLS has carefully planned for new challenges to come. These include cost-effective accreditation and approval processes of high quality, which will incorporate state of the art technologies, outcomes-based assessment, accreditation of international programs, and benchmarking. NAACLS will foster innovation of delivery modes for education, and consultative roles for its volunteers. It will facilitate dialogue between educators and employer administrators and managers to provide for a continued definition of professional roles and to support the proper utilization of graduates.

With a commitment to address and drive the future, NAACLS is prepared for and will meet its challenges and opportunities within those challenges. As in the words of William Shakespeare in The Tempest, "What's past is prologue"...........
