NAACLS Board Appoints a Task Force
by Joeline D. Davidson, MBA, CLS(NCA), MT(ASCP)
Past President, NAACLS Board of Directors

After thoughtful discussion, the NAACLS Board of Directors has appointed a task force to study the feasibility of requiring post baccalaureate education for entry level into the CLS/MT profession. The task force will determine the issues that need to be studied and then begin to address them via literature searches, information solicited from other organizations and professions, and from surveys involving the educational programs and the profession. The reasons for appointment of the task force are many.

The roles for laboratorians are rapidly changing. These roles require higher levels of scientific knowledge and clinical skills coupled with the knowledge and skills of troubleshooting, management, and consultation. It is becoming increasingly difficult to accomplish the necessary education in a standard undergraduate curriculum.

It is also important to attract a professionally oriented applicant pool for programs. Such applicants are crucial to the development of autonomy of the profession and to maintaining the profession's status among the other healthcare professions.

Changes in technology are creating new ways of doing things and requiring management to look carefully at the utilization of human resources. Employer needs must be met for all the enhanced and new job responsibilities that are now required. At a time when Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement is decreasing and managed care is controlling other third party payments, employers can no longer afford the luxury of on-the-job training for new graduates.

Consumers of health care are beginning to demand direct and ever easier access to testing. Professionals will require a different level of knowledge and expertise to deliver this type of service.

The issue of appropriate entry-level education is one that will require much research, investigation, and careful study. The NAACLS task force will welcome any pertinent information and data that may become available during the course of its work. Information may be sent to Olive Kimball, Chief Executive Officer, at the NAACLS office.
