Human Genetics: Health Professions Curricula
by Dr. David D. Gale
Member, NAACLS Board of Directors

In 2000, I was awarded a two-year contract grant by the Bureau of Health Professions, Human Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), entitled Human Genetics for the Health Professions: Model Curricula. The purpose of this project was to garner an interdisciplinary team of professionals from 10 allied health disciplines and develop strategies for infusing genetics into the discipline specific curricula. Participants in this genetics project were identified from the respective professional organizations as follows:

This interdisciplinary team of allied health professionals met on three occasions (November 3-5, 2000; March 2-3, 2001; September 28-30, 2001) to discuss and determine strategies for infusing genetic knowledge into the curricula of the identified allied health professional programs. Keynote speakers early in the assembly were Dr. Francis Collins, Director, National Human Genome Research Insitute; Dr. Monique Mansoura, an overview of the HGP, future direction, and implications for health professional education; Dr. Virginia Lapham, NCHPEG Core Competencies; Dr. Joann Boughman, Human Genetics in the Health Professions; and Dr. Miriam Blitzer, implementing medical genetics for medical students/licensure exam. Dr. Alan Guttmacher presented at the March 2001 meeting on resources available in human genetics, how to evaluate and link to these.

Representatives of the interdisciplinary team surveyed nationally reputable programs to access genetic content in the curricula. Few reported any human genetics content to be found in the allied health disciplines. The need to develop strategies to implement genetic content into the disciplines was clearly established.

The final product for this project is currently being collated and will be posted to the NCHPEG website as well as professional association websites. These include current status of human genetics education in the discipline, resources available and strategies for infusing human genetics content into the professional curricula.
