On July 1 of this year NAACLS' Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Olive M. Kimball, became Chair of the Board of Directors of ASPA, the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors. She was elected to that position after serving three years as the ASPA Treasurer. ASPA is the only national organization whose members are specialized and professional accreditors. These members set standards for entry into about 50 specialized or defined professions. They cover a broad range of fields that include business, engineering, forestry and teacher education as well as many health related agencies such as graduate medical education, nursing, dentistry and physical therapy. Member organizations may be found at the ASPA website at www.aspa-usa.org It is the mission of ASPA to work with officials in higher education and government to enhance the quality of education and accreditation. It functions as the only national voice for its constituency. Through its activities ASPA provides a forum for discussion and analysis for common action. As a result of recent discussion, ASPA has filed an Amicus Curiae Brief in support of a non-member accrediting body threatened with court action. Should the plaintiff, who was denied accreditation, win the case there would be serious consequences for the accreditation processes in that state. ASPA also provides for continuing education for individuals and organizations with accrediting responsibility and facilitates collaboration among programs, institutions and standard bearing organizations. In remarks to the membership at the fall ASPA meeting in Cleveland, Dr. Kimball spoke of the opportunity to serve ASPA and "to 'give back' just a little for all the support and professional education that ASPA as an organization and, more specifically the members, have afforded me." ASPA was formally convened in August 1993 in Phoenix and will be celebrating the tenth anniversary in the same city in September 2003. Dr. Kimball, new to NAACLS, was in attendance at the 1993 meeting and, as a consequence, NAACLS became a charter member of the organization. From a handful of accrediting agencies ASPA has grown to its present member size and has developed new alliances and strong advocacy initiatives. It has attained much broader recognition within the higher education community. Completing her remarks, Dr. Kimball thanked the membership for their trust and concluded, "To be selected at this time as Chair of the Board of Directors is not only a great honor but also a significant challenge. I will count on your help for us to meet that challenge and, working together, I am confident that we'll attain the dreams for ASPA that we originally conceived at the August 1993 meeting."
