NAACLS is a participant with 22 professional organizations in the Coordinating Council on the Clinical Laboratory Workforce (CCCLW). This council is examining issues related to the declining number of educational programs and the increasing shortage of staff. CCCLW is undertaking four important activities: data collection, marketing of the professions, recruitment, and financing of education. One of the component activities being initiated is the collection of anecdotes or case studies that support the critical role of laboratory services to successful patient care outcomes. This includes reduction of patient day stays and other patient encounter times, improvement in quality of care, saving of life, reduction in patient costs, and improvement in efficiencies in any process that would improve the overall cost savings in health care. CCCLW needs to know when, where and how the laboratory makes a difference. Also of great interest is how work redesign can improve services to patients as well as enhance efforts for recruitment and retention of excellent professionals. Send your stories and/or thoughts to the NAACLS office, either by mail, email or FAX. We will share them with the other CCCLW professions. Together we can make a difference.
