President's Report
Moving NAACLS to the Next Level of Excellence
by David D. Gale, PhD President, NAACLS Board of Directors
|
"When a man assumes a public trust, he should
consider himself as a public property,"- Thomas Jefferson |
The Board of Directors met in September and took a significant portion of
the meeting to review and revise the existing Strategic Plan. Such a review involves looking into
the future and requires us to make assumptions and at times be risk-takers in making decisions that will
affect NAACLS and its programs, students, and ultimately employers of graduates.
Several important goals were addressed. One involves the support of
cost-effective, high-quality outcomes for the NAACLS policies and procedures.
For example, there will be ongoing dedication to streamlining and clarification
of processes. To enlist broad input a customer satisfaction survey will be
conducted. Emphasis will be placed on delivery of educational programs for
volunteers, and assessment of ways to bring laboratory organizations together
for collaborative efforts. This is especially timely given the workforce issues
across the many fields that are represented by NAACLS and the frequent calls to
examine changing roles and needed skills within the laboratory. A proposed
outcome planned is a September 2004 conference on the future of the workforce,
growing out of the extensive work completed by the NAACLS Task Force on Entry
Level over the past two years.
Another goal relates to financial stability and development of current
technology. The Board will be reviewing accreditation fees and looking at
alternate sources of funding, possibly through endowments. A specific plan for
technology replacement will be developed. There is a real need to bring the
national office up to date with current technology
There is a goal to promote to the public the value of accreditation and approval
as they relate to student quality and patient safety. Still another, and
ongoing, goal calls for enhancement of accreditation for international programs
preparing workers in the laboratory.
These goals will direct future initiatives that NAACLS undertakes and will guide
us toward being the agency as stated in our mission:
NAACLS is committed to being the premier agency for accreditation and
approval of educational programs in the clinical laboratory sciences and related
healthcare disciplines through the involvement of expert volunteers and its
dedication to public service.
As we move our association to the next level, let us be sure to hear from you.
