The Board meeting marked the 30th year since NAACLS was organized. From minutes within the NAACLS archives it can be seen that on December 9, 1973, an interim meeting of the newly created agency was held. The following organizers were present: R. Mainwaring, MD, J. Smith, MT(ASCP), S. Pohl, MT(ASCP), C.R. Macpherson, MD and Annamarie Barros, MT(ASCP). Two members, J. Layton, MD and N. Bering, MT(ASCP) were absent. At this meeting the Board selected the following from the Board of Schools (precursor of NAACLS) to represent the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the American Society for Medical Technology (ASMT), the sponsoring organizations of NAACLS. The following individuals were selected: Ina Lea Roe, MT(ASCP) Ruth French, MT(ASCP) H. Adele Spence, PhD, MT(ASCP) Jerome Benson, MD Colin R. Macpherson, MD William Thompson, MD An additional six persons were selected to complete the Board, in addition to two members appointed by ASMT. Officers of the organization were elected with Colin R. Macpherson, MD, as Interim Chairman and Ruth French, MT(ASCP), as Interim Secretary. An organizational meeting of the Review Board took place on February 15, 1974, and the first actual meeting where actions were taken occurred July 26-27, 1974. Members attending this inaugural meeting were: Jerome Benson, MD Alice Curry, CLA(ASCP) Ruth French, MT(ASCP) David Jeffers, MT(ASCP) T. D. Kester, MLT(ASCP) Sidney Rodenburg, PhD Ina Lea Roe, MT(ASCP) Carl Schilling, PhD H. Adele Spence, PhD, MT(ASCP) Colin R. Macpherson, MD William Thompson, MD Scott Young Absent were John Budinger, MD, and Chalmers Coe. It is fitting that we acknowledge the work of these pioneering volunteers - they established many of the policies and procedures that work well today within the agency. The dedication and professionalism of these pioneers and the continuing work of volunteers through the years have enabled NAACLS to achieve the excellent reputation and stature it now commands in both the world of accreditation and higher education and the world of laboratory sciences. In honor of them, and to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the first Board meeting, NAACLS will host a national conference on September 25, 2004, in Chicago. It will provide an opportunity to look again to the future of laboratory sciences. Information will be available on the NAACLS website at the end of the year. Also during the anniversary year, NAACLS will be surveying its constituencies for evaluative input into current policies and procedures. Readers are encouraged to share their views and to participate in discussions affecting the future of the laboratory sciences. We must continue our history making efforts.
