Dr. NAACLS Advice for Accredited and Approved Programs

Dear Dr. NAACLS,

I am very excited about my recent Site Visit Report - the site visitors wrote
many comments in the "Strengths of the Program" section. I would like to use
this report to enhance the prestige of my program.



My idea is to publish, in the campus newsletter, an article about the program. I
would like to cite the results of the Site Visit Report. Is that permissible?

Dear Pleased,

Congratulations on the results of your site visit! It's always pleasant to have
the affirmation of a positive report! A site visit is a time when the
"Spotlight" is focused on the program - site visitors are speaking with
provosts, deans, faculty, students, laboratory administrators, and many of the
others within the community of interest. These meetings all focus on the
program, and it is the program's chance to shine!



Citing the Site Visit Report certainly adds to the authority of articles written
about the program. There have even been site visits where reporters have been
invited to the exit interview!



A few things need to be emphasized, however. The last page of the Site Visit
Report includes the "Important Notice, " which places limitations on what the
team may do. It reads as follows:



The site visit team does not have the authority to speak

on behalf of nor bind NAACLS regarding a program's

compliance with the Standards, nor can they predict

accreditation actions. These responsibilities rest solely

with the NAACLS Board of Directors, which has the

exclusive right to determine whether or not accreditation

is to be granted or continued.



NOTE: This page is compiled on the basis of information

supplied to the site visit team by the program director

and other officials. NAACLS makes no representation as

to its accuracy. The responsibility for accuracy of the

information provided to the team rests solely with the

program director and other officials.



In addition, the site visit, while a major portion of the NAACLS accreditation
review, is only one part of the process. The paper review and the responses to
both the paper review and the site visit accompany the Site Visit Report to the
program review committee for its recommendation. Even then, the process is not
over - the recommendation goes to the Board, which finally reviews the program
and grants accreditation awards.



The Site Visit Report is a report on the program, and is an external, peer
report. In that sense, it has a quality all its own. It is not, however, a
document of NAACLS' opinion, and NAACLS does not assure the accuracy of the Site
Visit Report. Quoting the Site Visit Report may be a way to communicate the
quality of your program, but a quote of the Site Visit Report is a quote of the
site visitors, not a quote of NAACLS.
