The Benefit of NAACLS Workshops

As noted in the NAACLS Mission Statement, volunteers are the indispensable core of NAACLS' accreditation and approval processes. Without knowledgeable volunteers to review papers, serve on committees and on the Board, these processes could not serve over 600 programs. Some accrediting agencies engage paid professionals to carry out these tasks but the cost to such an organization is high, especially for agencies that accredit or approve large numbers of programs.

While NAACLS relies heavily on volunteers, it also takes responsibility for educating the volunteers in the quite complex system that necessarily exists. One of the methods used to do this is through complete and detailed documents of instruction, such as the Volunteer Handbook, the various Guides to Accreditation, and the Policy and Procedure Manuals. Another method is through face to face workshops. While these provide orientation and education for volunteers, they also provide program directors, both new and experienced, with current requirements.

At the March 2004 Clinical Laboratory Educators Conference (CLEC), over 60 individuals, program directors and volunteers, participated in a workshop focusing on Standards: "Understanding Standards in Accreditation." The workshop was presented by Dr. Shauna Anderson who has served as chair of the CLSPRC and is currently Vice President of the NAACLS Board of Directors.

Providing a workshop at a professionally related meeting is the most common way of meeting the responsibilities of informing volunteers. However, workshops can also be provided to regional or state professional organizations, and they have been requested by and offered at academic institutions. In order to cover expenses and to keep fees low, a minimum number of participants must be registered.

In May NAACLS will offer two workshops in connection with the Ohio Society for Clinical Laboratory Sciences' (OSCLS) Annual Meeting. "Education Methodologies" will be presented by Lucille Contois. Ms Contois has served as Chair of a NAACLS review committee is now on the Board of Directors. "Accreditation Process: Key Issues of the Self-Study and Site Visit Processes" will be presented by Dr. Claudia Miller, currently Chair of the CLSPRC.

There are tentative plans for a September work shop. This would be held in conjunction with the annual conference of the National Society for Histotechnology and be directed to program directors.

In addition to face to face workshops, from time to time NAACLS convenes a teleconference workshop to orient volunteers about to go on a site visit. In the future it is hoped that web based workshops will be possible.

Staff members in the NAACLS office are open to suggestions, ideas, and requests. Details of upcoming workshops can be found at www.naacls.org.
