Volume 87 - Fall 2004

Lifetime Achievement Award
Presented to Norton German, MD
Directors presented the first NAACLS Lifetime Achievement Award to Norton German, MD. Dr. German has served as a NAACLS volunteer in many capacities, beginning in 1973. In that year he was appointed to the Certified Laboratory Assistant Committee (CLA) and chaired it for two years. Thus began a 31-year gift of service to accreditation and higher education from a gifted, dedicated and busy pathologist.

In the fall of 2002 the NAACLS News published "A Tribute to Norton German, MD" (Volume 82, page 5). It describes details of his contribution to NAACLS as well as his distinguished career in both military and civilian pathology. It marked completion of his term on the CLSPRC.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was the Board of Directors recognition that while many NAACLS volunteers have extensive records of service to NAACLS and are highly valued, none have served on as many committees in as many ways. In addition to the CLA committee, he was on the task force that drafted the 1977 MLT Essentials. He served two elected terms on the Board of Directors beginning in 1981 and agreed to serve an additional year. He was elected to the HT Committee and served two years as chair, becoming a member of the new CLSPRC when it was formed. He was histology lead person for that committee and worked on several sets of Essentials and Standards.

When he was about to retire, Dr. German was asked to serve an additional four-year term on the CLSPRC. After being honored for his service to that committee in 2002 he was asked to serve a short term appointment to APRC which he completed in 2004.

In addition to committee and Board work, over the years Dr. German has completed an extensive list of paper reviews and site visits, many of the latter as team leader. He has thoughtfully mentored both committee members and site visitors and has worked closely with all of the NAACLS Executive Directors and with the current CEO. No other individual has served in as many capacities within and for NAACLS. Dr. Norton German is truly unique and most worthy of our collective appreciation.
